During a 35-year career in communications, Dan has advised more than a third of Fortune 100 companies, including General Electric, IBM, 3M, General Motors, Coca-Cola, Verizon, Merck, Dell, and Nestle. He has worked with corporate general counsels, university presidents, and government officials on some of their most complex and high-profile issues, including reputational issues for General Motors, environmental issues for Texaco, air contamination issues for the EPA, natural disasters for the Red Cross, and drug safety issues for the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to his client-based activities, Dan is a noted observer of cultural and consumer trends who frequently presents his findings and insights to corporations, academic institutions, and trade associations. He is a sought-after commentator and trend analyst, having appeared on NBC’s The Today Show, ABC’s 20/20 and CBS’s The Early Show, as well as being a frequent guest on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, and Fox Business News.
A graduate of Georgetown University, Dan has built two successful communications firms from scratch. In 1987, he started Ryan-McGinn as a one-person office in Washington. A decade later the firm was on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing small businesses and ranked among the top 10 communications firms in the nation’s capital. Ryan-McGinn was purchased by the Interpublic Group in 1998. In 2001, Dan launched a second firm, The McGinn Group, which focused on assisting premier organizations with their most complex risk and innovation issues. The rapid rise of that company culminated in another alliance in 2007 – this time with The Publicis Groupe. The company was renamed TMG Strategies in 2008. In 2011, Dan started his third business, McGinn and Company.
